Spirit of Life Traditional Midwifery Newsletter Midwife Miami
Dear Friends of Spirit of Life Midwifery,

I LOVE BEING A MIDWIFE!!!

I am deeply grateful to the generations of midwives who have been keepers of the wisdom and truth of birth, who have faced persecutions, struggles and challenges to hold onto and pass along to midwives the truth of birth, as we know it.

Thank you to my sister midwives, whose wisdom and love continue to inform, support and encourage me on a daily basis. I am and always will be a student to midwifery.

And, I give thanks to the mamas and the babies who are truly awesome teachers. You have allowed me to bear witness to, and experience the creation of life, the creation of Mothers through Undisturbed, Self-directed, Life-changing BIRTH.

Love you all, I hope that you had a very "Happy International Day of the Midwife" & "Happy Mother's Day"!!!

International Day of the Midwife 2011...

A look back... how midwives all over the globe were honored this year

We plotted points on the map for cities all over the globe that celebrated or honored midwives and midwifery this year. It is very heart warming to see such a noble and loving practice honored in so many places around the world. If you have pictures, video or stories for any events that we missed, and would like to have them added to the map please use this link to email them to our Spirit of Life web development team. Request to be added to the Spirit of Life 2011 IDM Map.

We posed four very thought provoking questions about midwifery...

Q1: Midwifery is available to mothers in Florida, however, what would be the impact on families and mothers if this were made illegal as in some other states? ...

Q2: What can we learn from indigenous cultures about the sacredness of birth?

Q3: What is your favorite birth story that you have experienced? What is the importance of storytelling during the birth experience?

Q4: What was your single greatest moment of personal triumph during your birth, homebirth or water birth experience? Looking back on it now, how did it empower you as a women.

Here is the answer to question #3 from Pema of http://wondermommas.wordpress.com:

Q3: What is your favorite birth story that you have experienced? What is the importance of storytelling during the birth experience?

My favorite birth story is my own story of birthing my daughter in water in our home and then having the unique blessing and gift of being able to shower in my own shower, eat in my own kitchen and nurse and sleep in our family bed immediately after birth. When I tell that story to women, they look hopeful and excited about that very idea for themselves as well. I know I have personally inspired 3 women to birth at home (they all had smooth births and beautiful babies) and because of a story I was told through "The Business of Being Born", I too was inspired to give birth at home and will do so again if I have another baby.

Julia Ward Howe - "Carrying on the Art & Tradition of Midwifery"

Spirit of Life Traditional Midwifery - Midwife MiamiThe Mothers Acting Up movement was launched with a parade on Mother's Day, inspired by the words of Julia Ward Howe. In 1870 she wrote a Mother's Day Proclamation and called for a day when the world would honor what mothers hold most dear: the lives of our children, of all children. Her words are still as revolutionary as ever. Arise!

Mother's Day Proclamation- 1870

Arise then … women of this day!
Arise, all women who have hearts!
Whether your baptism be of water or of tears!

Say firmly:

"We will not have questions answered by irrelevant agencies, our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage, For caresses and applause. Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.

We, the women of one country, will be too tender of those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs."

From the voice of a devastated Earth a voice goes up with our own. It says:

"Disarm! Disarm! The sword of murder is not the balance of justice."

Blood does not wipe out dishonor, Nor violence indicate possession. As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil

At the summons of war, let women now leave all that may be left of home

For a great and earnest day of counsel. Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead. Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means Whereby the great human family can live in peace… Each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar, But of God - In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask That a general congress of women without limit of nationality, May be appointed and held at someplace deemed most convenient And the earliest period consistent with its objects, To promote the alliance of the different nationalities, The amicable settlement of international questions, The great and general interests of peace.

THE TAO OF MIDWIFERY

And so, the midwife performs her work by doing nothing.
She teaches without speaking a word.
Things arise and she lets them come.
Things leave and she lets them go.
Creating, not possessing. Working, but laying no claim.
And then, when her work is done, she forgets about it.
And so, it lasts forever.
