What Happens after the Baby is born?
|
|
![]() |
After your baby is born...your birth team, which consists of your Midwife and assistant, will remain with you for the first several hours until you and your baby have eaten. If you've given birth at a Birth Center you will go home approximately 4-6 hours after the birth. If you've had your baby at home, your team is with you at home for 3-4 hours or until Mom, baby, and family are ready to be on their own. During those first few hours the Sheila and her Midwife Assistant will be assessing you and your baby for continued health and she will complete a full physical exam on your baby. Written and verbal postpartum instructions for the mother and newborn will be given to the parents and any other care givers, after the birth. |
Sheila will visit 24-72 hrs after the birth to ensure that all is well with you and your baby, to assist you with breastfeeding if needed, and to answer any questions that you may have. During this visit you will sign the birth certificate and we'll collect a small sample of blood from your baby's heel for the Infant Metabolic Screening (PKU) that is required by the State of Florida.
Immediate Newborn Care
Spirit of Life Traditional Midwifery is there to provide immediate newborn care, including informing the family what to expect over the first few days, how to monitor the child’s health, SID’s prevention and general care. We are available by phone and in person to assist the parents and child through this new period.
Breastfeeding Support
The Midwives at Spirit of Life Traditional Midwifery are trained to assist you with breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding, though a natural process, may take time and lots of patience to establish a good latch, recognize hunger cues, and alleviate any breastfeeding challenges. We work with you to get breastfeeding established to ensure your baby gets the best: the breast. This process is even more important than ever after recent studies of breast milk versus formula showed the extensive benefits of breast milk. Spirit of Life Traditional Midwifery has a robust community that supports each other with information, conversation or can be there to just listen when you need it the most. Please be sure to visit our community and join our breast feeding support forum. Learn More»
